BE A FOSTER PARENT

foster care parentBeing a foster parent is a genuinely rewarding experience. Fosters are very special people who open their hearts and homes to a pet in need. Everyone at PAWS appreciates the time and attention given to each pet by their foster "mom" or "dad".

Fostering a pet in-home increases their chances at adoption by allowing them time to learn and develop social skills and manners. All fosters have free behavior and training classes made available to them and their foster pet. We want this to be a great experience for both of you.

You can download our Foster Care Information sheet below and also the Foster Parent Application. You can choose to email or print out the application to mail it in (online applications will be available soon) Note: all foster parents must be at least 25 years old.

Please be sure to check out our FAQs below for more answers to your questions or call us at 325-653-8056.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How old do I have to be to foster a pet?
PAWS foster parents must at least 25 years old.

How long will I be fostering each pet?
The average time for a pet spent in foster care is 4 weeks but each situation is different.

What happens after I send in my application?
Our PAWS foster care coordinator will contact you to go over your application and answer your questions.

Do I have to spend any money as a foster parent?
No - PAWS takes care of all food and medical expenses. We will be actively looking for a new home so we do ask that you are available to bring your foster pet for introductions and/or adoption events. We even have toys available if you need them. We ask only that you provide love and companionship for the pet in your care.

What should I know before becoming a foster parent?
While fostering an animal is a great experience you should be prepared. Discuss the idea with all members of the family. You will be required to make sure the pet has the proper care and love it needs at all times. Any animals currently in your home must be up to date on all vaccinations. A home check may be required prior to your application approval.

What if I want to keep my foster pet?
Fostering a pet is an emotional endeavor. Sometimes foster parents truly fall for the pet after spending so much time with them. We have to keep in mind that for each foster home available - it is one more pet that can be saved from euthanasia. Your foster home is a crucial part of the success of the adoption process and finding them the forever home they deserve. Adopting your foster is of course an option, but you should carefully consider before closing your heart and home off to the many others that could be saved.
